United States: industry breadth

Each month the Institute for Supply Management® lists which of its 18 manufacturing and 18 services industries reported growth (strongest first) and which reported contraction (steepest first). Shade = rank in those lists; grey = no change reported. A breadth signal, not an index level.

What it measures

The balance of firms reporting rising versus falling activity, converted to a 0–100 scale where 50 means no change. It measures how widespread growth is, not how fast output grows.

Method

Reading = 50 + balance ÷ 2, exactly the share of firms reporting "up" plus half the share reporting "unchanged". Methodology.
